Humpback whales are enormous creatures, about the size of a school bus. They are known for their haunting and melodic songs and for breaching the water with amazing acrobatic abilities.
Humpbacks don't normally have a hump on their backs; the name comes from the large hump that forms when they arch their backs before making a deep dive into the ocean.
Humpbacks roam all over the world, but exactly where they may be found depends on the time of year. In the summer, many humpbacks spend their time in high-latitude feeding areas such of the Gulf of Alaska or the Gulf of Maine, according to the NOAA. During the winter, they swim to the warm waters closer to the Equator, around Hawaii, South America and Africa.
Travel by bus from Punta Cana to Miches, where we begin our journey by sea until reaching the port of Samana. We will sail a catamaran along the coast of Samana all the way to Cayo Levantado, enjoying a unique landscape. The coast of Samana is a beautiful environment full of islets filled with lush vegetation, making it an ideal place for the famous humpback whales, which can usually be seen year round.
We will be picked-up in Samana by a Safari Truck, in which we will visit the south area of the peninsula of Samana, enjoying the local lifestyle along the way, the crop fields and a tropical landscape. We will be arriving to the ranch located near the waterfall El Limon, where we will learn about local handcrafts, art and the elaboration of chocolate, tabaco, and coffee. You will be able taste some tropical fruits, such as; mangos, coconut, papaya and tea.
We will later horseback ride with a guide, take us through a beautiful tropical jungle and climb all the way up until we reach the Waterfall El Limon. A guide will be there the entire time to help you, walking side by side, making this a safe activity for children, adults and the elderly. We will cross rivers, forests and rocky trails and enjoy the quiet landscape each step of the way.
El Limon Waterfall
We will make the journey to the waterfall on top of a horse, hidden in the middle of a tropical forest in the peninsula. This waterfall is a spectacular 50 meters high and has a beautiful natural swimming pool, in which we will be able to enjoy a swim, and take some amazing pictures.
Feels like a postcard in paradise. Cayo Levantado, also known as Bacardi Island, is a small island in Samana bay, northeast of Hispaniola Island in the Dominican Republic. It is only 1 kilometer long, has a humid forest vegetation and amazing white sand beaches. We can assure that after seeing this paradise, you will not want to return to reality.
The Safari Truck will pick you up around 7. Depending on your hotel, pick up may vary between 7 and 8 in the morning.
